5 simple tips for everyday eye care!
Taking care of your eyes is a lifestyle choice. It is so much more important these days as we spend most of our lives in our homes. Adults work from home, kids are in online classes, and these lifestyle changes put more pressure on our eyes. We are increasingly prone to developing big and small eye diseases nowadays. But there are a handful of activities that can help us keep our eyes healthy.
Let’s dive into five simple ways to maintain good eye health in our everyday life.
1. Drink your water!
Yes. Staying hydrated is super important for your eyes as well as it is for your entire body. Our eyes need water to produce tears. And tears are not only required when you are crying. A proper amount of tear production is essential to keep our eyes lubricated. Lubrication is necessary to keep eyes moist, remove bacteria, and remove dust particles and other small particles that get in the eyes. So, keep your water bottle closer and remember to drink from it often.
2. Keep good hygiene, and don’t touch your eyes!
We are all required to keep extra good hygiene in this pandemic situation. Good hygiene matters a lot for your eyes as well. Always keep your hands as clean as possible. Wash your hands often as we unconsciously touch many things. Our hands could be carrying bacteria and other things that are harmful to our eyes. Resist the urge to rub your eyes when they are irritated, especially when you are going through eye infections. Doing so will only worsen the situation. Some of you might have learnt it the hard way! So, stay super clean and try not to touch your eyes!
3. Maintain a healthy sleep schedule
Shutdown time is highly important for your eyes to rest. When you sleep, your whole body goes into rest and repair mode. Your eye cells are restored, and healthy eye cells lead to healthier eye function and better vision. When you don’t get enough sleep, your eyes can feel strained, dry, and itchy the next day. Lack of sleep can cause eye strain, burst blood vessels, and dry eye. So, stop messing with your bedtime routine and let your eyes heal as you get that 7 to 8 hours of sleep every day like you should.
4. Move your body. Exercise.
Regular exercise is great for your overall health as well as it is for your eyes. Several studies show that working out regularly reduces and prevents the risk of developing several eye diseases including age-related eye problems. Cardiovascular workouts help in lowering intra- ocular pressure in your eyes. This can reduce the risk of developing glaucoma. Exercising also increases the blood flow to the optic nerve and the retina. Simply put, working out is good for your overall eye health. All the more reasons to work out regularly!
5. Use the right eye makeup.
Only use good quality cosmetics that are safe to use around your eyes. Ensure your eyes are not allergic to any material used in the cosmetics. You should make sure your face and eyelids are very clean before applying makeup. Always remove your eye makeup before going to sleep. Try to use natural products like coconut oil to remove your makeup. And never ever share your cosmetics with others.
