What is an Eye Bank?

Our eye bank is fully equipped and modernized, with highly trained staff and certified technicians, offering round the clock services to the society. Lotus eye bank is connected with our Satellite Centers – Salem, Tirupur, Mettupalayam , R.S Puram and Cochin.

A place for storing and preserving corneas that are obtained from human corpses immediately after death, used for corneal transplantation to patients with corneal defects. An eye bank is a non-profit organization managed by a medical director, an eye bank manager and eye bank technicians.

Functions of an Eye Bank

Availability of trained staff round the clock to attend the calls.
Evaluate and provide quality corneas to corneal surgeons.
Enable corneal research using unsuitable for grafts to find newer techniques, improve preservation methods and train corneal surgeons.
Increase public awareness about eye donation and eye banking.
Train doctors in correct methods of removal of eyes.
Develop and establish a network of eye donation centers.

Who can donate eyes?

Eye donors can belong to any age group or sex.

People who use spectacles, diabetics, hypertensive and those without communicable diseases can also donate eyes.

Patients who have undergone cataract surgery.

Facts about Eye Donation

Eyes can be donated only after death
Eyes must be removed within 6 hours after death.
Eye removal does not delay the funeral ceremony.
Eyes removal does not cause disfigurement.
Eyes are removed by a trained doctors the eye bank team does the removal of eyes at the donor’s residence.
The entire procedure of removing eyes takes around 10-20 minutes.
Religions are not against eye donation.
The identity of the recipient and donor is kept confidential.
Our eye bank is affiliated to the eye bank association of India.
In the event of a death in your family you can contact our eye bank as quickly as possible.
Eyes will be removed only with the consent of the donor’s family.

What happens after Eye Donation?

Contact the eye bank as quickly as possible.
The donor’s family receives a certificate of appreciation from the eye bank
The eyes are taken to the eye bank and evaluated by a trained eye bank staff
Tests are carried out and the tissue is sent to the corneal surgeon
The waiting list is referred and the recipient is called for corneal transplant

If the death certificate from the physician is available, keep it ready.
Eye donation can be done only with the consent of the next of kin in the presence of two witnesses.

Keep the air conditioner on if it is available.

Lotus Vision Research Trust

Lotus Vision Research Trust is the charitable wing of Lotus group. LVRT Conducts rural outreach programs for the needy poor.It also carries out free cataract surgery under districts blindness control society and other eye free surgeries under Tamilnadu Chief Minster scheme.

India is a vast country having 28 States and 7 Union Territories with 593 districts, with an average population of nearly two million in each district.Eye care approach to the problem of avoidable blindness, prevention and creating awareness among the society is a great task facing the ophthalmic community.Growing population, inadequate infrastructure, Poverty, aging population, diseases in epidemic proportions, Ignorance and non-availability of eye care centers in the rural areas are the main causes of the blindness.

Lotus Vision Research Trust (a non-profitable charitable trust) had a humble beginning in the year 1993.It was established to prevent and eradicate blindness with dedication and humanitarian approach.The main motto of the trust is Mission for Perfect Vision. Providing solutions to the eye diseases, creating awareness and taking preventive eye care measures for life long quality vision.

Lotus Vision Research Trust was inaugurated on February 02, 1993 by his holiness Swami.Satchidananda at a colorful function presided over by the noted Industrialist Arutchelvar Dr.N.Mahalingam.

Lotus Vision Research Trust is established to identifying blind in every village, organizing free screening camps at suitable locations, arranging free transportation for patients to the designated facilities.Patients who cannot afford the full cost treatment are given concession or free treatment. The medical team would visit their places for the post operative care treatment follow up.

Selecting new spectacles can be daunting, whether you’re buying your first pair or you’ve worn them all your life. Optical counter has a variety of frames and lenses for all age groups The Hospital have a very spacious air conditioned optical showroom within its premises. With a state-of-the-art infrastructure, open display systems, wide range of choice and premium lenses and exclusive frames are displayed in the showroom where a customer can try and wear any frame of his/ her choice and style.

Our experienced and friendly staff/ executives guide patients on selecting the right choice of spectacles, the patients are given professional and expert guidance regarding the choice of frame and lens thus patients can look forward for a hassle free new spectacle wearing experience.

Customers can choose glasses for regular prescription, UV protection or trendy wear. Frames are available in metal, poly carbonate and gold. Lenses are available for single vision, bi-focal (Kryptoc & D), Multifocal and Progressive.Every spectacle order delivered from Optical counter is effectively verified and checked by in house optometrist for 100% accuracy comparing with the prescription generated by the Ophthalmologist.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy department provides a comprehensive service to all of Lotus Eye Hospital patients. It is often the last but essential stop for patients during their hospital visit – around 80% of our patients will receive a prescription. It stocks all essential medicines normally required for eye care.

Our dispensary supplies items for both inpatients and outpatients, which includes:

Clinic prescriptions
Discharge prescriptions (often referred to as TTOs)
Private prescriptions

The pharmacies at our group of hospitals are fully computerized to ensure the provision of a fast and efficient patient service. The average wait for an outpatient prescription is about 10 minutes.

Pharmacy Opening Hours

The pharmacy division of our hospitals functions from 8.30 am – 8.00 pm on all working days (Monday to Saturday) and on Sundays from 8.00 am – 1.00 pm.
