ReLEx SMILE – What makes it better than LASIK?
LASIK, the most popular eyesight correction surgery, has been around for three decades now.
With tens of millions of procedures done worldwide, LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses) continues to help many to be free of spectacles.
ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newcomer in the field of laser powered eye correction surgeries. This method has been in use since 2016, and around 4 million procedures have been done worldwide within this short period!
Ophthalmology surgeons have started to cite this decade as the time for the downfall of the LASIK method giving way to the advanced procedure ReLEx SMILE, and the reasons are many.
There are many similarities and differences between these two methods. Both these methods are very safe, effective, and low risk. The recovery time is minimal for both procedures as well as the duration of surgery.
The patients can get back to their daily activities within a few days after the procedures. Both these procedures are painless as well.
The major difference between the two procedures is that LASIK requires a corneal flap, and SMILE doesn’t. In the LASIK method, a specialized surgeon makes a thin layer of a corneal flap with a surgical blade to expose the corneal tissue. Through that opening, the laser reshapes the cornea. And the procedure is finished by closing the flap.
When it comes to SMILE, a corneal flap is not required to perform the surgery. The incision is smaller than LASIK, and hence, SMILE is less invasive. Another advantage of ReLEx SMILE is that there is less risk of post-surgical dry eye infection.
